A new social product is empty, and the screens have to work in that state. The feed needs a first-run block with one action, write something or invite one person, instead of a blank rectangle under a tab bar. Once there is content, a post is the photo or the text, the author's name, and a way to react that does not cover the content.
People look for four other screens. A profile that shows that person's posts. A compose screen with the photo or the draft above the caption field. An activity list of who did what, newest first, with the object of the action still visible. A conversation row with a face, the last line, and a time.
Dating, a group chat, a forum, and a public feed are different home screens. Dating leads with a person and two actions that are hard to hit by accident. A forum leads with a thread title. A chat leads with the conversation. Start from the template that matches the relationship, then change the nouns.
Add a stories tray or a clubs grid when the product needs them. A stories row on a forum makes the home screen about the wrong object. Sample posts are fine in a prototype if they are labeled as examples, so a founder can tell the empty state from the live one.
