Media & Entertainment mobile app templates

People open a media app to resume something or to find something new. Home needs both, and they should be separate. A continue row uses artwork the user already knows. Under it, a browse area for what is new, grouped in a way they understand, such as a show, a genre, or a topic. Artwork has to be large enough to recognize. A tiny title under a poster is how these grids all blur together.

The player is its own screen. What is playing, how far along it is, and the main control: pause, skip, or save. Library is only what the user saved, separate from the catalog, or a saved song looks like another recommendation. A detail screen for one title holds the art, a short description, and play.

Search can stay a field on home until the catalog is large enough to need a screen. Music, podcasts, video, news, and games split at the player. A song needs a playhead. An article needs the text, with the reading position kept when the user leaves. A game needs a lobby and a session, not a progress bar pretending to be a track.

Start from the player you need, then build the home screen back from that. A streaming template forced into a game still looks like a catalog of episodes.

Questions, answered. Everything to know before you start.

What are the two jobs of the home screen?
Resume and browse. Continue, or recently played, is a row of things already started. Below it, group the catalog by something the user understands, a genre, a show, or a topic. One endless grid of posters makes both jobs harder.
What does the player screen need?
The title, the artwork, the position in the piece, and the main control. Save, share, and next can sit nearby, smaller. For an article, the player is the text, and the reading position should still be there when the user comes back.
How is a game layout different from a streaming one?
Home is a lobby: what to play, and a way into the session. The session screen is the game, not a timeline of an episode. Use the gaming template for that. Use a music or streaming template when the object is a track or an episode.
Where do saved items go?
On a library screen that lists only what the user saved or downloaded. Mixing saves into the catalog makes a saved title look like a recommendation. The library can be a tab once there is more than a handful of saves.
